DGX Monthly – May:

New Speaker, New Framework and More Coffee Chats

Hey everyone,

And welcome to this month’s DGX Monthly 👋

One thing we keep seeing — over and over again — is that most people still have no idea what Data Governance actually is.

When we walk into an organisation, we’re usually starting from scratch. Not just with execs. With everyone. Despite all the frameworks and maturity models out there, most people are still guessing.

So why is it so complicated?

We think it’s evolved so much that it’s hard to tell what is — and isn’t — part of it anymore. We use too many buzzwords (please don’t say metadata to your execs). And most frameworks just weren’t built for the average business user. Plus, there’s not much out there that shows you how to actually implement it in practice.

At DGX, we’re trying to change that — and make Data Governance simple again. So simple your grandma could understand it. We break it down into four clear areas: Establish, Understand, Protect, Enable — and focus on making each of those actually usable day-to-day.

That thinking led us to develop the new DGX Data Governance Framework — a simple, practical structure designed to help real teams get clarity, build momentum, and get the job done without drowning in theory.

We’ll be unpacking that framework in this month’s newsletter.

Let’s dive in.

MEME OF THE MONTH

Introducing the Updated DGX Data Governance Framework

We’re proud to announce the release of our updated DGX Data Governance Framework — a clear, practical model that simplifies governance for real-world delivery.

Designed by practitioners, this framework focuses on enablement, not red tape. It helps organisations build trust in their data, improve quality, and manage risk without overcomplication.

The framework is structured around four core capabilities:
Establish – Develop your strategy, roles, policies, and operating model
Understand – Identify and manage critical data, metadata, and lineage
Protect – Safeguard data with strong privacy, risk, and AI governance practices
Enable – Improve quality, stewardship, and literacy to support business outcomes

Data Governors in Cafes Drinking Coffees Recap

This month’s café catch-up was with Simone, Data Governance & Enablement Manager at Pepperstone Financial, over a great latte at Mr Collins in Melbourne.

Simone is a deeply thoughtful and passionate data governance leader with experience that spans decades, countries, and industries. Our conversation centred on the human side of governance—why it’s people first, policy second. Simone’s approach, which we like to call Empathetic Data Governance Engagement (EDGE), focuses on building trust, understanding culture, and connecting with people before rolling out change.

She reminded us that governance is often a mindset shift more than a framework. So much of successful governance comes down to relationships, empathy, and communication—things that are often undervalued in our field.

We also talked about aligning architecture, enabling single sources of truth, and the role of governance in setting a solid foundation for AI. But what stayed with us most was Simone’s grounded perspective: no matter how fast technology moves, governance is still about people.
