Data governance should be about enablement, helping teams move faster, trust their data, and build better data products.
Yet, most data governance programs are still measured mainly by compliance and security checkboxes.
If you want to know whether your data governance team is truly making an impact, it is time to rethink your scorecard. You need real metrics that show you are improving data culture and how data and AI are being used.
Here are the key data governance metrics I recommend tracking:
➡️ Data Literacy Score: An average score out of 10 from annual assessments across teams. This measures how well your team understands data and shows if their skills are improving year over year.
➡️ Data Catalogue Engagement (percentage of Teams): The percentage of active data teams who have contributed to or searched the data catalogue in the past 30 days. This tracks collaboration and reuse, key signs of a healthy data culture.
➡️ Governed Data Products (percentage): The share of key data products that are documented, owned, quality-assured, and actively used. This shows how embedded governance is in your data delivery.
➡️ Data Quality Coverage (percentage of Critical Data Elements): The percentage of critical data elements with automated quality checks running in production. This reflects how well you monitor and maintain data quality.
If these metrics are not improving, are you really enabling your teams or just ticking boxes?
